Letter, 1893 May 23.

Letter concerns a piece of rope (attached) that was used to lower the body of John Brown into the grave after being convicted and hanged for leading the raid of abolitionists on Harpers Ferry Army Depot in 1859. The letter details the manner in which this piece of rope came in to Mr. Eldridge's possession.

John Brown (May 9, 1800, Torrington, Connecticut – December 2, 1859, Charles Town, Virginia) was born in Connecticut in 1800 before migrating with his family at an early age to the Connecticut Western Reserve. James William Eldridge served in 127th New York Infantry Regiment, Co. A in 1862-1864. In Sept. 1864 he joined the 23rd U. S. Colored Troops with the rank of Second Lieutenant and was promoted to First Lieutenant in Mar. 1865. After the war he began an extensive collection of letters, manuscripts, books, photographs, and other materials relating to the major military and civilian figures of the war years.
